All Ears: A new Sonic Landscape (2005)

Live performance

A site-specific performance using the natural resonant frequencies of the room to manipulate the behaviour of sounds and the audiences’ experience of them. Using the unique way in which sound behaves in the space, the piece envelopes the audience within pulsing, ringing and humming sounds of resonance and reverberation weaved throughout a hypnotic musical performance.
Originally a site-specific performance, when the 5.1 recording of the piece is played in other locations it transfers all of the acoustics of the original venue to those spaces, bringing resonance to dampened rooms and space to small environments.

Created in collaboration with Nick Acons and Jim Walker.
Supported by Arts Council England.

This was my first Arts Council England Project Grant - within first year of graduating from my BA.

In My Good Ear (2006)

Live performance

Following the success of her previous composition 'All Ears', Alison worked again with Nicholas Acons and Jim Walker to create another site-specific performance using the natural resonant frequencies of the room to manipulate the behaviour of sounds and the audiences’ experience of them. This time the addition of Amy Nicholson on cello brought more depth and harmony to the piece, enhancing the atmosphere of the composition and complementing the violins.Using the unique way in which sound behaves in the space, the piece envelopes the audience within pulsing, ringing and humming sounds of resonance and reverberation weaved throughout a hypnotic musical performance.

Wires & Bows (2009)
Single screen video with stereo audio

An experimental animation comparing the sounds of violins with the movements of telegraph wires from a moving train.

Created in collaboration with filmmaker Andrew Brand: www.andrewbrand.co.uk/

Pod (2009)
Multi-media installation (AV equipment, PVC spheres)

An interactive installation giving physical form and shape to low frequency sound at the cusp of human hearing.

The audience is invited to touch the ‘pods’, feeling the resonance that low frequency sound creates upon the skin of these large blue spheres, and to press their ears to the surface to listen to the humming sounds within. ‘Pod’ translates the low frequency sounds into a visual object to be heard, seen and felt. With their own physical presence, the sounds can be experienced in new ways, associating a size and shape with the frequencies being heard.

Created in collaboration with Artist and Technologist Mike Blow.

The Narrator Is Present (2017)
performance, audio, live-stream online, duration variable

How can we distinguish fictional narrative from truth among the multitude of disembodied voices on the Internet?

As visitors enter the gallery, an unknown narrator describes their actions. Their narrative may be an accurate documentary of real-life events or the narrator may stray into fiction - sometimes playful, sometimes troublingly divisive in nature. Being watched, potentially around the world, whether audiences choose to protest, play along, or simply observe, is their choice.

Existing simultaneously in the gallery and online, the work exploresthe dualistic experiences of the virtual and the physical, and the ways in which these two spaces contribute to a single reality.
